Two Pieces for Viola and Piano - Frank Bridge
Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op. 147 - Dmitri Shostakovich
Sonata for Viola and Piano - Rebecca Clarke
- with OSM Associate Principal violist Victor Fournelle-Blain
About the program:
This concert features two moving and iconic works for viola and piano - the sonatas of Dmitri Shostakovich and Rebecca Clarke - with Frank Bridge's "Two Pieces" to set the scene. Both Shostakovich and Bridge were greatly affected by war and oppression throughout their lives, to which their music bears witness. Bridge wears his heart on his sleeve with this early work, which begins wistfully and introspectively but transforms into extroverted charm and passion. Shostakovich's sonata for viola and piano was his very last composition and is overwhelmingly stark and painful, but with rare glimmers of light that take one's breath away. Finally, Rebecca Clarke's sonata comes blazing straight out of the gate, with drama and impulsiveness running close to the surface.
An emotional and exciting program, this music is an outlet for both the deepest moments of angst as well as the most miraculous moments of hope and joy.
